TEACHING / INDEPENDENT STUDIES

Your question.
A focused investigation.

Opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to explore people, information, and technology through directed study.

Independent study & directed research

Independent study offers space to investigate a topic beyond a scheduled course. A project might develop a literature review, investigate user needs, evaluate an interface, or explore a question about responsible AI.

My mentorship includes more than 30 independent studies through INSC 591, supporting students in developing focused research and practical skills.

Discuss an independent study

A proposed study process

  1. Start a conversation

Share a topic, your learning goals, and your proposed semester.

  2. Define the scope

Agree a question, methods, deliverables, meeting schedule, and assessment criteria.

  3. Investigate and reflect

Document sources, design choices, findings, and limitations through regular check-ins.

  4. Share the outcome

Develop a final report, prototype, evaluation, or other agreed product.

Expectations & learning outcomes

Projects should have a manageable scope, a clear connection to information sciences, and responsible use of sources and data.

  • Frame a focused research or design question.
  • Read and evaluate relevant literature.
  • Select methods appropriate to the question.
  • Communicate findings and limitations clearly.
This is a proposed planning framework. Registration, prerequisites, credit, and any research approvals must be confirmed before beginning a project.
